How to Plan for Pregnancy

Posted on March 4, 2024 at 4:04 PM by Gabrielson Clinic

If you’re expecting to be expecting, what steps can you take to ensure a healthy pregnancy? In this blog, we’ll cover what you should do if you’re planning on becoming pregnant soon.

Stop Drinking Alcohol, Smoking, and Taking Drugs

Drinking alcohol, smoking, and drugs can cause issues during pregnancy, such as premature birth, birth defects, and infant death. If you’re planning on becoming pregnant, stop these activities before you become pregnant, and do not drink, smoke, or take drugs during your pregnancy.

Make Sure You’re at a Healthy Weight

Being overweight can make it more difficult to get pregnant, and fertility treatment is less likely to work for you. It also raises your risk for certain health problems during pregnancy, such as high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, or miscarriage. To ensure a healthy weight, make sure you’re eating a balanced diet and getting moderate exercise. If you are interested in weight loss services, contact our partner, Iowa Weight Loss Specialists!

Learn your Family History

If there are specific health issues that run in your family, it’s important to know about them before becoming pregnant. Learn about your family’s health-related history, and consider getting testing done to identify any issues that may be genetic, such as sickle-cell disease.

Start Taking Folic Acid

Folic acid is a B vitamin that’s important for healthy growth and development. Taking folic acid before and during pregnancy can protect your baby from brain and spine-related birth defects. Start taking a supplement with 400 mcg of folic acid at least one month before becoming pregnant and through the first twelve weeks of pregnancy.
