A pregnant woman lies in a hospital bed before delivery.A birth plan is a simple list of your wishes for labor, delivery, and your baby's first hours. It helps your care team know what matters to you. Your plan can change if you or your baby need extra care.

What Is a Birth Plan?

A birth plan is a written guide that tells your doctor and nurses what you would like during childbirth. It can include who you want by your side, how you want to manage pain, and how you want to care for your newborn baby after birth.

You do not need a birth plan to have a healthy delivery, but making one can help you feel more prepared. It also gives you time to ask questions before labor starts.

Keep in mind that birth does not always go as planned. Your care team may need to make changes to keep you and your baby safe. Your birth plan helps start the conversation, but it does not replace medical advice.

How to Create a Birth Plan

Start by thinking about what is most important to you. Do you want to move around during labor? Would you like pain medicine? Who do you want in the room?

You do not need to know every answer right away. Talk with your OB-GYN during your prenatal visits. Your provider can explain your choices, answer questions, and help you learn what is safe for you.

Try to keep your birth plan short and easy to read. One or two pages is often enough. Share it with your provider before your due date, and bring a copy to the hospital.

Remember, this checklist is a starting point. You can add more details or change your mind at any time.

What Should You Talk About With Your OB-GYN?

Your birth plan should reflect your needs and your baby's health. Before delivery, talk with your provider about pain relief options, how your care team will monitor your baby’s heart rate, and any medical care you may need.

You can also ask about starting labor with medicine, having a vaginal birth after a past C-section (VBAC), or what might happen if an emergency occurs.

After birth, your baby will need routine care. This includes a vitamin K shot to help prevent dangerous bleeding. Your baby's doctor can also explain other shots, tests, and care your baby will need.

It is okay to have questions. We want you to understand your care and feel heard.

Birth Plan FAQs

When should I make a birth plan?

You can start your birth plan at any time during pregnancy. The third trimester is a good time to write down your wishes and review them with your OB-GYN before your due date.

Do I need a birth plan?

No. A birth plan is not required. It is simply a helpful way to share your wishes with your care team. You can also discuss your preferences with your provider during your prenatal visits.

What if my birth plan changes during labor?

That is okay. Labor can be hard to predict. You may change your mind about pain medicine or your baby may need extra care. Your medical team will explain your options and help you make safe choices.

Can I make a birth plan if I need a C-section?

Yes. You can include who you want with you, how you would like to meet your baby, and your wishes for care after surgery. Your options may depend on your health and whether the surgery is planned or an emergency.

What if I have a high-risk pregnancy?

You can still make a birth plan. Some health conditions may mean you or your baby need more care during delivery. Your OB-GYN can help you create a birth plan that respects your wishes while keeping you and your baby safe.

Should I bring my birth plan to the hospital?

Yes. Bring a copy of your birth plan to the hospital so your nurses can review your wishes with you.
