Who can be in the delivery room when I’m giving birth?
Your birthing experience is personal and important. The decision of who you want in the delivery room is entirely up to you, as long as it allows the medical team to care for you and your baby safely. Visitors must listen to the directions they are given from the nurses and doctors.
Here are some helpful guidelines to consider when deciding who will be there during your delivery.
Common People in the Delivery Room:
- Your Partner: Most often, this is your spouse or significant other. Having your partner by your side can offer emotional and physical support during labor.
- A Doula: A doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical and emotional support during labor and delivery. Many women find their presence comforting and helpful.
- A Parent or Close Family Member: Whether it's your mom, sister, or another relative, having a family member in the room can provide support and reassurance throughout the birth.
Important Considerations:
- Your Comfort Level: It's essential to choose people who will help you feel calm and supported during labor. You should never feel pressured to invite someone into the room if it makes you uncomfortable.
- Children: While some hospitals may allow older children, it’s important to consider whether it’s the right choice for your child and your birthing experience. It may not always be the best environment for younger children due to the intensity of labor pains.
- Choosing Your Delivery Team: Think about the kind of support you need. Some women prefer a more intimate experience with only their partner, while others feel comforted with a larger birth support group, like a close friend or family member. Make sure to invite people who can handle the intensity of the moment and provide the positive energy you need.
- Setting Boundaries: It’s your labor and delivery experience. If there’s someone you don’t feel comfortable with being present, it’s okay to say no. You are allowed to establish the boundaries that make you feel safe and supported.
Practical Tips:
- Keep the Guest List Small: Many hospitals limit the number of people in the delivery room to maintain a safe and controlled environment. For your comfort and your medical team’s ability to do their job, we recommend keeping the guest list small—no more than two to three people.
- Have a Backup Plan: Life can be unpredictable, and there’s always a chance that your chosen support person might not be able to make it. It's a good idea to have a backup in mind, just in case. Be sure they are familiar with your birth plan and are prepared to step in if needed.
- Communicate with Your Medical Team: If you have a birth plan, discuss your preferences with your doctor ahead of time. Let them know who you would like to be present in the room and any special requests. This helps everyone involved ensure your birth experience goes smoothly.
