How to Prepare for Birth With Confidence & Trusted Guidance
Congratulations on your upcoming baby!
Pregnancy is an exciting time, but it can also bring lots of questions and worries. Maternity education classes help you feel prepared, calm, and confident as you get closer to delivery.
At Gabrielson Clinic for Women, we proudly partner with Iowa Specialty Hospitals & Clinics to offer free maternity classes for our patients. These classes give you clear, honest, and evidence-based information, so you know what to expect and how to advocate for yourself during birth and beyond.
Advance registration is required for our maternity education classes. View our events calendar for upcoming class dates and to complete the registration.
What Are Maternity Education Classes?
Maternity education classes, also called childbirth or prenatal classes, help expecting parents learn about:
- Pregnancy changes
- Labor and delivery
- Pain management options
- Postpartum recovery
- Newborn care and breastfeeding
Our goal is simple: help you feel informed and supported, even if your birth experience does not go exactly as planned.
Why Take Childbirth Classes?
There is a lot of maternity advice online, but not all of it is accurate. Our classes are led by trained professionals who share reliable, up-to-date medical information in an easy-to-understand way.
These classes help you:
- Reduce fear and anxiety about childbirth
- Understand your body and your choices
- Communicate clearly with your obstetric care team
- Feel more confident during labor and delivery
- Prepare your birth support person to help you
Your provider wants you to have this information, but they cannot cover everything in a short office visit. These classes fill that gap.

When Is the Best Time to Take a Birthing Class?
Most parents take childbirth education classes around the sixth or seventh month of pregnancy. This timing keeps the information fresh while allowing flexibility in case your baby arrives early.
Some topics, like healthy pregnancy habits or choosing a provider, can also be helpful earlier in pregnancy. Your provider can help you decide what timing works best for you.
