In this blog, learn all about the pelvic floor and how to care for this important part of your body.
What is the Pelvic Floor?
Your pelvic floor is a group of muscles, ligaments, and nerves that stretch from the pubic bone to the tailbone. It supports organs such as the bladder, bowels, and uterus and assists in the functions of all these organs.
What Can Weaken the Pelvic Floor?
There are a variety of factors that can contribute to a weakened pelvic floor. Pregnancy and childbirth are linked to a weakened pelvic floor, as well as factors that put pressure on the pelvic floor, such as obesity or chronic constipation. Additionally, aging weakens the muscles in the pelvic floor, and genetics plays a role in the overall strength of your muscles and connective tissues.
Symptoms of a Weak Pelvic Floor
Symptoms indicative of a weak pelvic floor include:
- Frequent visits to the bathroom
- Constipation
- Incontinence
- Pelvic pain
- Lower back pain
How to Strengthen Your Pelvic Floor
If you are experiencing symptoms of a weak pelvic floor or pelvic floor dysfunction, it’s important to talk to your doctor to see what your treatment options are.
Treatment for pelvic floor dysfunction often includes physical therapy and biofeedback, which are used alongside each other. Physical therapy can assist in strengthening your pelvic floor muscles, and biofeedback uses sensors and video to monitor your pelvic floor during physical therapy, enabling your physical therapist to provide guidance. Sometimes your doctor may prescribe medication to help with some of your symptoms as well.
