Summer Skincare and Protection

If you’re participating in outdoor activities this summer, it’s important to take proper care of your skin. In particular, increased sun exposure has the potential to cause serious damage. Read on for our best summer skincare tips!
Use Sun Protection and Wear Sunscreen
Sun exposure has a variety of benefits, and is a good source of Vitamin D. However, if you’re going to be outside for a prolonged period, take precautions to protect yourself- seek shade, wear a hat and sunglasses, and apply sunscreen.
Look for a sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection and has a sun protection factor (SPF) of at least 30. Without sun protection, you greatly increase your risk of skin cancers such as melanoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Make sure you reapply sunscreen every two hours to reap the full protective benefits.
Makeup with SPF
Many makeup brands advertise formulas that include SPF, but are they effective? On their own, these products don’t provide adequate sun protection, but there’s no harm in using them alongside sunscreen.
Treating a Sunburn
If you get sunburned, there are several things you can do to aid the healing process. Applying aloe vera to the burned area can both soothe and moisturize, and cool baths and showers can help relieve the pain. Drinking plenty of water will help prevent dehydration and assist your body in healing, and you can also take a medication like Aspirin or Ibuprofen to reduce swelling.
If your skin starts to peel or blister, leave it alone. Pulling the skin off can introduce bacteria or lead to deeper skin injury, and blisters help your skin heal and protect you from infection. It's best to allow these things to go away on their own.
