The Importance of Pap Smears

Posted on November 14, 2023 at 10:00 AM by Gabrielson Clinic

Most women know that regular Pap smears are an important preventative health measure. But what exactly is a Pap smear, and why is it so important?

What is a Pap Smear?

A Pap smear, also called a Pap test, is a routine screening for cervical cancer. It involves collecting cells from the cervix, which is the lower part of the uterus at the top of the vagina. These cells are then examined for abnormalities.

During the procedure, your doctor will insert a speculum into the vagina so they can see the cervix. Then, they’ll use a small brush to gently scrape cells from the cervix. This isn’t painful, but you may feel some pressure.

Who Should Get a Pap Smear?

Typically, any woman who is over the age of 21 should get a routine Pap smear. Your doctor may have different recommendations based on your age and medical history, so make sure to consult with them.

Why is a Pap Smear Important?

Pap smears are crucial for the early detection and prevention of cervical cancer. Cervical cancer is highly treatable when caught in its earliest stages. Because of how long it takes for cervical cells to change from abnormal to cancerous, this allows for timely intervention and treatment if necessary.
