Making the Switch: How to Find the Right Provider

Posted on June 7, 2022 at 10:00 AM by Gabrielson Clinic

Finding the right provider is key to making sure you get the best care for your unique needs. Finding a new doctor can be intimidating and can be hard to know where to start or what to look for, but it doesn't have to be! With the ReDoc program, we pair you up with the right doctor for you and handle all of the switching hassles.

Why Make the Switch

There are many reasons why you may want to switch from your current provider. Common reasons include:

  • Moving
  • Diagnosis of a new condition
  • Retirement or relocation of a doctor
  • Unhappy with the care received

It’s extremely important that you feel comfortable and happy with the provider you receive care from. You should feel comfortable communicating with your doctor, and you should receive that same communication back. You should also feel confident knowing that your provider has the experience, skillset, and proper tools to provide the expert level of care you deserve.

Questions to Ask Yourself

Many people find their new provider by searching “doctors near me” and scrolling through the first few results. However, finding a doctor best suited to your specific needs requires more careful consideration. Whether you are looking for a primary care provider or a specialist, there are a few questions you should ask yourself.

  • Am I looking for a doctor for myself or for a family doctor?
  • Do I have any chronic health conditions or past surgeries?
  • What location would I like to see my provider?
  • Do the provider and their clinic have the proper experience to meet my needs?

Common Reservations About Switching

Making a change, especially when it comes to the person in charge of your healthcare, can be intimidating. Uncertainty about choosing a clinic near you and a provider at that clinic can make it difficult to switch. For patients who do not have any underlying or chronic conditions, it can sometimes seem like finding the perfect primary provider is not a big deal.

For other people, the reason why they don’t switch doctors is because they simply don’t know where to start. Ideally, you could fill out a form with some of your basic information, and then an expert would take care of the rest. With Iowa Specialty’s ReDoc program, that’s exactly what you can do!

Specialist vs. Primary Care Provider

Finding the right primary care physician is equally as important as finding the right specialist. Your primary doctor provides comprehensive, ongoing care for you and your family throughout your life. Vaccinations, check-ups, medication prescriptions, etc. are typical services you receive from your primary care provider. Specialists focus on a specific area of care, such as cancer treatment, sports medicine, and obstetrics.

Depending on any health conditions or concerns you may have, you may want both a primary doctor and a specialist. The ReDoc program can help match you up with your ideal primary care doctor, specialist, or both.
