Common Pelvic Problems and Solutions

April 21, 2022

Your pelvic floor muscles stretch from your pubic bone to your tailbone and support an important range of bodily functions. Changes to your pelvic floor can occur due to a wide variety of circumstances and can significantly impair your daily life. Pelvic floor health is an essential part of women's healthcare, and it is important to know and understand possible causes for concern.

Pelvic Problems - Gabrielson Women's Clinic

Common Pelvic Conditions

There are many conditions that can affect your pelvis. A few common conditions include:

Weakened Pelvic Floor: Childbirth, obesity, chronic constipation, and aging can all weaken your pelvic muscles.

Pelvic Floor Dysfunction: This condition results in an inability to control your pelvic muscles due to injury, surgery, menopause, pregnancy, and genetic predisposition.

Pelvic Organ Prolapse: This condition occurs when your pelvic muscles and tissue can no longer support vital organs (such as your bladder, rectum, uterus, etc.), causing them to drop out of their normal position.

Chronic Pelvic Inflammatory Disease: PID is an infection in the reproductive organs that is usually sexually transmitted but can also occur by the spread of a bacterial infection.

Symptoms of a Pelvic Condition

Many pelvic diseases and conditions share similar symptoms. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, you should visit a women's health clinic as soon as possible to consult a gynecologist.

  • Urinating frequently (noticeably more than is typical)

  • Urinary incontinence (loss of bladder control)

  • Pain during urination or bowel movements

  • Pain during intercourse

  • Reduced sensation or pain in the vagina

Pelvic Condition Treatment

Treatment options will vary depending on the type and severity of your medical condition. The Gabrielson Clinic offers a variety of both surgical and non-surgical women’s health services.

Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy: Pelvic physical therapy is a combination of specific pelvic floor strengthening exercises under the guidance of a certified physical therapist with special equipment. In addition to on-site exercises, the physical therapist will educate the patient on at-home pelvic floor exercises, diet modifications, and more. Pelvic floor physical therapy can be used to help with the treatment of common pelvic disorders including urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, constipation, and overactive bladder.

Vaginal Pessary:  A vaginal pessary is a small silicone or plastic device that is inserted into the vagina to help support a prolapsed pelvic organ, which may be the vagina, bladder, rectum, or uterus. A pessary is a common non-surgical treatment for pelvic organ prolapse and urinary incontinence.

Surgical Treatments: Our women’s clinic offers a variety of surgical treatment options to address pelvic conditions.
